Disney and Pixar's Monsters University and Brad Pitt's big-budget horror film World War Z tugged at Superman's cape at the box office this weekend and knocked Man of Steel off the perch after just one week in the top spot.

The Zack Snyder-directed Superman reboot movie fell to third place behind the aforementioned films. Monsters University came in first and grossed $82 million, while World War Z took second with $66 million, according to Box Office Mojo. Man of Steel still hauled in a very respectable $42,215,000 to put it well ahead of fourth-place This is the End, which took home $13 million in its second week.

The news is not all that discouraging for the big-budget superhero blockbuster. Monsters University had plenty of buzz behind it as fans of the original Monsters Inc. (2001) had long awaited another adventure with Sulley and Mike. World War Z, on the other hand, had the star power of Brad Pitt to draw plenty of theatergoers.

In just 11 days, Man of Steel has grossed $210,006,000 in the United States and $188,300,000 overseas. The Superman film has hauled in $398,306,000 worldwide in total and took in $116,619,362 in its opening weekend.

Man of Steel broke a June record for an opening weekend when it earned $128.6 million during its four-day opener to break the previous record of $110.3 million set by Toy Story 3 in 2010.

The latest Superman movie, which stars Henry Cavill, could still break the rare billion-dollar mark that only 16 movies in history have reached.
