A plethora of A-listers have praised the Disney Channel for the announcement that an upcoming show would feature openly gay characters. Miley Cyrus and Evan Rachel Wood have been at the forefront.

TV Guide confirmed last week that the show "Good Luck Charlie," a program in its fourth and supposedly last season would feature a pair of lesbian parents. Wood and Cyrus jumped on Twitter on Sunday to praise the announcement.

"Hell yea," Wood said after retweeting a post from Ellen DeGeneres. Cyrus was a little more outgoing in her excitement.

"is this true?!?!?! I commend Disney for making this step into the light of this generation," she typed. "They control...so much of what kids think! Life isn't bright sets & wardrobe & kids becoming superstars! This is INSPIRING".

The Disney channel said in its announcement that the decision was made with the ultimate goal of being relevant and enlightening to its viewers.

"This particular storyline was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisors," the company said in a statement. "Like all Disney Channel programming, it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness."

Channels such as the Disney Channel and PBS affiliates have taken a more active role in recent years in attempts to educate children. "Sesame Street" just announced last week it would introduce a character whose father is in prison.
