Kanye West, 'I Am A God,' Receives Mixed Responses From The Christian Community [Take Poll]

Kanye West's 'I Am A God,' featured on his most recent album, 'Yeezus,' has received mixed responses from members of the Christian community.

P.O.D.'s Sonny Sandovol, in particular, has criticized the new track saying that West's music and lyrics "deceives many and will lead people astray," according to a recent interview with TMZ. Sandovol quoted Matthew 7:15 to help make his point, which states, "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves."

In an interview with W Magazine, West explained that his inspiration behind the new song came when he was invited to a highly anticipated runway event on the condition that he had to agree not to attend any other shows, the Christian Post reports. "So the next day I went to the studio with Daft Punk, and I wrote 'I Am a God,' " West told W. "Cause it's like, Yo! Nobody can tell me where I can and can't go. Man, I'm the No. 1 living and breathing rock star. I am Axl Rose; I am Jim Morrison; I am Jimi Hendrix ... You can't say that you love music and then say that Kanye West can't come to your show! To even think they could tell me where I could and couldn't go is just ludicrous. It's blasphemous-to rock 'n' roll, and to music."

He went on to explain that he wrote the song because he believes himself to be a god in some senses of the word. "I made that song because I am a god. I don't think there's much more explanation," West told W. He argued that he doesn't need to defend himself and that it is part of rock 'n roll and rap music. "I am a god. Now what?" he said.

MissInfo.tv. also reports that, at his recent New York City listening party, West said, "I wanna explain something about the title Yeezus, simply put West was my slave name and Yeezus is my god name," the CP reports.

In addition to the lyrical content, West claims that the new song is 'featuring God,' which also faced a great deal of criticism.  However, Michael Sweet of the Christian metal band, Stryper told TMZ that he gets why Kanye would write a track like that, figuratively claiming that God is featured on the album. "When you believe in God, you want Him to be a part of everything you do, guiding you through the entire process. So, I understand what is meant," Sweet said.

MTV reports that West admits that he sometimes phrases things the wrong way and gets himself in trouble. "God's little practical joke on me - as an intellect who doesn't like to read a lot - is like, I'll say some superphilosophical sh--, but I'll say it the wrong way," he explained. "I'll use the wrong word, so it goes from being really special to completely retarded."

Kanye's new song states, "I am a god/ Even though I'm a man of God/ My whole life in the hands of God/ So y'all better quit playing with god." The song grapples with a mixture of emotions, claiming the power of a deity but ending with shrieks and panting that suggest a kind of vulnerability, according to policymic.com.
