Actor Pierce Brosnan released a statement on Monday evening announcing that his daughter Charlotte passed away from ovarian cancer. She was 41.
"On June 28 at 2 p.m. my darling daughter Charlotte Emily passed on to eternal life, having succumbed to ovarian cancer," he said. "She was surrounded by her husband Alex, children Isabella and Lucas and brothers Christopher and Sean."
The loss is only made more bitter by the fact that Charlotte's mother, actress Cassandra Harris, died in 1991 from the same form of cancer. Brosnan and Harris had been married since 1980. According to the John Hopkins Pathology Department, approximately 10 percent of women with ovarian cancer carry a hereditary gene that makes them more susceptible to the disease. Charlotte was Harris's child from another marriage, but Brosnan adopted her and her brother legally following their father's death in 1986.
Brosnan thanked well-wishers for their condolences and offered his hopes that soon there would be a cure for the "wretched disease."
"Charlotte fought her cancer with grace and humanity, courage and dignity," he said. "Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our beautiful dear girl. We pray for her and that the cure for this wretched disease will be close at hand soon."
Tributes came in from actors that Brosnan has shared the screen with.
"My heart goes out to Pierce Brosnan & his family..so devastating," tweeted James Bond co-star Denise Richards.
