It is no secret that the fashion world is racist and models are cast based on the color of their skin. For decades Black models have been cancelled and refused the same treatment as their white peers. However, after 20 years, the famous fashion house Prada is finally changing all that.

Kenyan born Malaika Firth, 19, has been appointed as the first black face of Prada since super model Naomi Campbell paved the way in 1994.

Firth's triumph for brown skinned models comes on the heels of an incident her role model Jourdan Dunn had with Christian Dior. After being cancelled by Dior for her 32A cup size, Dunn tweeted Sunday, June 30, "I'm normally told I'm cancelled because I'm 'coloured' so being cancelled because off [sic] my boobs is a minor."

Firth told The Telegraph in a recent interview that she admired Jourdan Dunn. "She has inspired me the most, just because of how down to earth she is as a person, Firth tolf The Telegraph. "I love her drive and passion for modeling as well."

Fashion hours have been notorious for ostracizing black models. According to Daily Mail UK, Dior has been called out in the fashion world for their overt racism and lack of cultural diversity.

James Scully who heads up model casting at Tom Ford, Jason Wu, Derek Lam, Stella McCartney, Lanvin and Carolina Herrera, told Buzzfeed in March: 'I feel the Dior cast is just so pointedly white that it feels deliberate.

"I watch that show and it bothers me - I almost can't even concentrate on the clothes because of the cast," Scully told Buzzdfeed. "Recently they're changing from a very diverse, worldwide, multicultural cast to just a very Germanic-looking white girl."

The Prada 2013 campaign also included Chinese model Fei Fei Sun and veteran Christy Turlington. Congrats Malaika Firth on your first campaign and to Naomi Campbell for paving the way for black female models.
