Jay-Z Tour 2013: Hova's Concert on David Letterman's Marquee Cancelled by New York City

The seemingly endless stream of promotions for Jay-Z's upcoming album "Magna Carta Holy Grail" has hit a roadblock. New York City announced on Wednesday that it would not allow the rapper to perform atop the marquee of the Ed Sullivan Theater on July 8 as previously planned. 

Jay had previously announced the performance for the Sunday after July 4 in order to celebrate and promote the release of the new album. The city, which had previously put its support behind the show, withdrew permission after concerns of "terrorism and fireworks" emerged. Officials from Jay's camp, the theater and the NYPD were supposed to meet on Tuesday to discuss plans for the concert when the city opted to pull the plug. Plans to reschedule and/or move the concert have not been declared as of yet. 

This isn't the first time Jay's been refused a show on top of the theater, which also plays host to the "David Letterman Show." In 2010, Hova had similar plans to play in the exact same spot, and the city nixed it at the last moment. Of course in 2010, a Drake show at the South Street Seaport in lower Manhattan had nearly caused a riot, and officials were probably skittish. It seems that now officials fear the leftover energy (and illegal firepower) from July 4th could cause problems. After that cancellation, Jay moved the concert to the roof of the building, which while not as great a view for fans, didn't require special permits. 

It's not like Jay would be the first artist to play a concert on top of the marquee. Paul McCartney and his band have performed up there, as have name band Phish.
