Sharknado was the actual title of a movie that aired on the SyFy channel on Thursday night and somehow, someway, the disaster film (in more ways than one) swept across Twitter like, well, like a tornado.

First, some quick background. The SyFy channel is infamous for its films that take two creatures and mash them together in low-budget disasters (Pegasus vs. Chimera, Arachnoquake, etc.). But last night, something special happened.

Maybe it was the absolutely absurdity of the plot, in which massive tornadoes that roar through Los Angeles lift thousands of sharks from the sea and rain them down upon the city.

Maybe it was the fact that the movie stars Ian Ziering (Steve Sanders from "Beverly Hills, 90210) as a character named Fin and Tara Reid.

Maybe it was the horrendous-even-for-a-SyFy-original-movie special effects that miraculously changed the lighting three times in one scene.

Maybe it was lines such as "Instead of letting live sharks rain down on people, we're going to get in that chopper and throw bombs into the tornados."

Maybe it was the fact that the movie ends like THIS.

But whatever it was, Sharknado completely took over Twitter on Thursday night. Viewers all experienced this affront to cinema together. Celebrities tweeted about the movie. Even Mia Farrow got in on the Sharknado craze.
