'The Conjuring' reviews are coming in hauntingly fast. The thriller hit theaters this past Friday and is already being buzzed about as a successful, sometimes predictable, nail-biting thriller. The plot is based on the true story of the 1971 haunting of the Perron Family in Burrillville, Rhode Island.

The Perron family lived in an 18th century farmhouse that had several reported paranormal experiences prior to the family moving in.  Shortly after the family arrived, spirits began to haunt them.

"Mrs. Perron said she awoke before dawn one morning to find an apparition by her bed: the head of an old woman hanging off to one side over an old gray dress," reads an August 1977 story in The Providence Journal. "There was a voice reverberating, 'Get out. Get out. I'll drive you out with death and gloom."

Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren came in to help the family and found themselves in what was one of their most hauntingly terrifying cases they've worked on.

Director James Wan leads an experienced cast of actors that includes: Vera Farmiga (Lorraine Warren), Patrick Wilson (Ed Warren) and Lilli Taylor (Carolyn Perron).

Jordan Hoffman for Screencrush reports:

"[Wan] is the unrivaled champion of a specific sort of hold-your-breath scene, where you know the jump is just about to happen. And just when you think it's a goof or a head-fake, BLAM!, the thing you knew was going to pop out at you, pops out you - and there's a good chance you just shouted and made a fool of yourself. This makes for a great time at the movies - or even for watching at home with the lights off. In this regard 'The Conjuring' is a success. The other side to this, however, is the story. It's no dumber than the usual supernatural horror flick, but it also isn't any better. You've seen it before, you'll see it again."
