Peter Capaldi was revealed as the 12th Doctor on "Doctor Who" yesterday during a special on BBC1 entitled "Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor." The acclaimed actor will be replacing the departing 11th Doctor, Matt Smith, during 2013's Christmas episode. But what does this mean for the Matt's last episodes? He has the 50th anniversary special already filmed and ready for airing on November 23, but does knowing who he regenerates into spoil the end of the eleventh hour?

What we know about the upcoming 50th anniversary special is that Matt Smith's Doctor is joined by the tenth Doctor (David Tennant) and a mysterious "in-between" Doctor played by John Hurt for the Time Wars. This is a widely talked about incident in the Doctor's past, but has never been explored too much until now. But what does this experience do to Eleven? Clearly it leads to his death/regeneration in the Christmas episode, but as fans know, regenerations are basically adaptations to the Doctor's past.

Though this is just a theory for many Whovians, the differences between Ten and Eleven are pretty apparent. Ten was a bit dark and suffered numerous losses throughout his tenure. So Eleven was more about saving people and looking on the bright side of things. With an older actor coming in to play Twelve, it would appear that he could be hardened and worn by the events of the 50th anniversary special.

Do you agree?

Here is the video footage of Capladi being introduced as the Twelfth Doctor followed by an excerpt from the official "Doctor Who" press release that announced Capaldi's casting:

Amid much hype and speculation, Peter Capaldi was unveiled as the next Doctor during a special live television event on BBC AMERICA and BBC ONE today.

Widely regarded as one of the biggest roles in British television, Capaldi will be the Twelfth Doctor and takes over from Matt Smith who leaves the show at Christmas.

Peter Capaldi says: "Being asked to play The Doctor is an amazing privilege. Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can't wait to get started."

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer says: "It's an incendiary combination: one of the most talented actors of his generation is about to play the best part on television. Peter Capaldi is in the TARDIS!"

Doctor Who companion, Jenna Coleman says "I'm so excited Peter Capaldi is the man taking on the challenge of becoming the Twelfth Doctor. With Steven's writing and his talent I know we'll be making an amazing show with an incredible incarnation of number 12. I can't wait to start this new adventure!"
