Fans have been wondering how the upcoming ABC television series "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." would connect with the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its next, biggest project, The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Writer/director Joss Whedon addressed those concerns during the Television Critics Association press tour. First and foremost is S.H.I.E.L.D. director himself, Nick Fury. Whedon said that he would "love to have (Samuel L. Jackson)" on the show, according to IGN.
"He's a movie star and a workaholic, so whether or not he makes time for us, I can't say yet," Whedon said. "I hope so."
Whedon also spoke about the movie actors (Samuel L Jackson, Chris Hemsworth, etc.) and said he would reach out to them about appearing on "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." if he thought all parties would benefit.
"I'm not going to go begging," Whedon said. "And I'm not going to use up favors I need for The Avengers 2. As I say, the DNA of the show is the show. Those guys would be a delightful bonus, but we're not building our arcs around them."
Finally, Whedon discussed how the movie stars' appearances on television would parallel the superheroes' appearances in the grounded-in-reality world of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."
"The good thing about the universe is that they're superstars in that universe. So if they showed up, if they overbalanced it slightly, that would actually make sense. That's how people would react to them in the universe of the show, so I don't think that's problem," Whedon said. "I do think it's a problem if you have them too regularly and people are just wondering, 'When do I get to see a movie star again?' instead of concentrating on these guys."
"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." premieres on Sept. 24.
