'NSYNC's performance at the 2013 MTV VMAs was a big surprise to fans and even some of the boy band members.

According to lead vocalist and former "Americas Best Dance Crew" judge, J.C. Chasez said Justin Timberlake made the phone call to the group for a reunion on stage. Although, people buzzed about the band singing their hits on the very first stage they started as a group, the big secret was out the bag.

In an interview with Ryan Seacrest Monday, the singer recalled getting the phone call from his former band mate

"It was just a matter of time. Everybody would ask us, 'When are you guys going to do something?' "he said. "First of all, it was the worst-kept secret ever, [but] Justin gave me a buzz and he said, 'Hey man, listen. I'm getting this award and they have given me a pile of time to perform and we started our careers at MTV and I think we should get the band back together."

Almost 11 years since the group parted ways to venture off into Hollywood and their own solo projects, Chasez admitted that it felt like they never left once they began rehearsals, "two minutes after seeing everybody you feel like no time has passed."

In addition to accepting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, Timberlake took home the award of the night for Video of the Year for "Mirrors," who he dedicated the award to his grandmother who he based the video around her relationship with his late grandfather.

Although, fans and celebrities like Taylor Swift were captivated by the surprise, the groups reunion was far more than a paycheck or their last 15 minutes together, but simply about friendship.

Chasez told Seacrest, "It was just about five guys who were great friends who spent 10 or 15 years together touring and we ... wanted to give that back to our fans, but we were there mainly to support Justin."
