Is Adam Levine the "art police?" According to "Applause" singer Lady Gaga, he just might be. Over the weekend, the two pop music bigwigs battled it out in passive-aggressive tweets that seem to be aimed at one another.

Levine kicked it all off on Sept. 20 by writing, "Ugh..recycling old art for a younger generation doesn't make you an artist. It makes you an art teacher," on his official Twitter account. The vague tweet wasn't directed at any singular musician or artist in particular, but the Mother Monster seemed to take offense at the statement.

"uh oh guys the art police is here," she wrote the following day (Sept. 21), seemingly unprompted.

The two tweets have no confirmed relation, but this wouldn't be the first time that someone has accused Lady Gaga or reusing old art and claiming to be an original. Gaga is frequently compared to pop legend Madonna both musically and in personality. She's also been accused of ripping off David Bowie, Cher and lesser-known artists.

Meanwhile, Gaga may insist she simply took inspiration from artists of yore and that she is an original.

"'Applause' is a very meaningful song to me, because it addresses what many think of 'celebrities' today, that we 'do it' for the attention. But some of us are 'artists' in this group called 'celebrity,' & what we create doesn't live on unless there's an audience to remember it," she wrote recently on her Twitter, when explaining the meaning of her first "Artpop" single.

What do fans think? Is Adam Levine subtweeting Lady Gaga? Is the Mother Monster an original artist or a rehashing of Madonna? Sound off in the comments!
