Today in "Whaaaat?...Awesome" Fall Out Boy are releasing an EP inspired heavily by '80s thrash/harcore. As someone who still believes the greatest thing the Save Rock and Roll band ever did was a cover of Gorilla Biscuits, the eight-track EP Pax Am Days is a welcome surprise.

Patrick Stump rubs the trademark sheen off his vocals and takes some time to yelp like Black Francis. In addition, the typically slick sound of FOB's instrumentation is traded for Dead Kennedys-aping riffs and honest-to-goodness thrash breakdowns, aided by a Steve Albini-esque approach to the production

Fall Out Boy actually went on record, saying they were attempting to emulate the legends of their youth: The Replacements, Screeching Weasel, Damnation A.D., Los Crudos and Gorrilla Biscuits.

"That's the music that got us into playing as Fall Out Boy and we wanted to pay homage to that," bassist Pete Wentz said. "I think, for bands like us, we can be a gateway. We can say like, 'Hey, check out what these other bands we grew up with do.' I think that's an important thing to do as an artist. But most importantly, it was just kind of exercise in fun. It was like, 'Let's just make noise and if it gets recorded, cool; if it never comes out, cool.' And that's something that we decided last time around, that this was going to be something that was really important to the future of Fall Out Boy. It was just kind of to make sure we were always having fun in the process."

The Ryan Adams-produced EP is currently streaming at KROQ and drops on October 15.
