This probably shouldn't come as a complete surprise, but Katy Perry is under fire from animal rights organization PETA. Anytime an entertainer uses animals in their movie, TV show, or music video it seems PETA is just a moment away from condemning them. Even Perry and her new single "Roar" aren't invincible from the criticism. It seems PETA and Oscar-nominated environmental film director Chris Palmer aren't happy with Perry's use of an elephant in her music video for "Roar."

The New York Daily News reports that Palmer told Confidenti@l that he has written a letter to Perry complaining of Perry's continual use of captive elephants as accessories. Perry also allegedly rode into Perez Hilton's birthday party in 2010 on an elephant while also using an elephant as a part of her nuptials to Russell Brand.

Palmer, who has followed Suzy the elephant's life wrote that a California set, is not the place for an elephant. "Suzy is Katy's reluctant elephant co-star in the song's video," Palmer said (via Confidenti@l). "Elephants don't like loud noises, bright lights or hectic sets with dozens of people running around.... How did Suzy, a member of a threatened species from Africa, find herself next to Katy Perry on a deafening California set? She was violently captured from her free-roaming herd in Zimbabwe when she was 2 years old and shipped to the U.S., where she was most likely bound and beaten in order to make her perform without complaint."

Perry reportedly has defended her use of Suzy, saying that no animals were harmed on the set of her music video. However, this isn't enough for PETA as they reportedly had planned to protest outside of "Saturday Night Live" last night where Perry was performing.

"I don't imagine that Katy's mean, just distracted," PETA said in a statement. "Katy Perry may be one of the biggest pop stars in the world, but next to that sad elephant, she looks like a very small person."
