This weekend's box office results are in and it looks like it was a two-movie race between "Gravity" and Tom Hanks' Somali pirate thriller "Captain Phillips." According to The Wrap, "Gravity" was able to hold off "Captain Phillips'" big opening weekend by once again pulling in big numbers. "Gravity" has been getting a lot of buzz off of great reviews from those who have seen it, which is why it came in first this weekend, pulling in $44 million at the box office.

"Captain Phillips," which is based on the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the hijacking of his ship by Somali pirates in 2009, was generating quite a bit of buzz. The movie was all over television the last few weeks, with a heavy amount of promotion put into the film. Despite not winning at the box office, it pulled in an impressive $26 million in its opening weekend. However, the 3D space drama "Gravity," starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney just couldn't be stopped.

"Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" came in third place with $14 million this weekend. Meanwhile, "Machete Kills," the latest film from Robert Rodriguez bombed at the box office. Daily Finance reports that the movie is expected to bring in less than $4 million in its opening weekend. Although it was by no means expected to be a huge blockbuster, the original opened to about $11 million back in 2010. With a number of big name stars such as Lady Gaga, Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson, and Sofia Vergara this has to be a disappointment.

It seems both "Gravity" and likely "Captain Phillips" will have some staying power at the movie theaters. Both films have been hailed by critics and seem to be getting great reactions from audiences. These types of Oscar-worthy films always seem to stay strong at the box office.
