The New York City marathon returns this year after last year's race had to be cancelled due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy. As many as 47,000 runners will be racing in today's 2013 ING NYC Marathon, which will include increased security after the Boston Marathon bombing that occurred back in April. Coverage of this year's race starts 7am on Sunday and will be broadcast on ESPN and ABC and there are also numerous ways you can watch a live online stream.

If you want to follow this year's marathon and are not by a television you can go to WATCHESPN, WATCHABC, or ABC 7's local news site for live coverage, results, and the live stream.

The 26.2 mile race will feature thousands of runners, spectators, and security. The amount of added security has been a main storyline going into today's race. NYC Police Commissioner said that at least 1,500 security cameras will be placed along the route. CNN reports that there will also be bomb-sniffing dogs, scuba divers, and counterterrorism officers surveying bridges, shore lines, and ferries.

ING's official NYC marathon website notes of the increased security:

"This year, NYRR has partnered with one of the world's top security firms to conduct a top-to-bottom analysis of our existing internal security program. We are confident that their recommendations will further strengthen our already comprehensive security plan. There are a number of visible security enhancements in place for this year's race, as well as several behind-the-scenes security elements."

The website recommends against bringing a bag if possible, as there will be a number of baggage inspection areas.

The safety of everyone involved at this year's marathon will be of major importance to NYC police and marathon organizers as the memory of the Boston marathon bombing is still fresh in everyone's minds. The Boston marathon bombing left three people dead and around 260 people injured.
