Layer Cake is one of the highest critically rated films in the last decade. It introduced us to the Daniel Craig's best role, which eventually led to him getting the role of James Bond in Casino Royale and the films that followed (and are still following). Considering Craig is busy with this franchise, he is unable to come back 9 years after his Layer Cake role was completed to film the sequel entitled Viva La Madness (both of which are based on the books of the same names by J.J. Conolly). But there is a fitting replacement for our unnamed antagonist: Jason Statham.

Statham and Craig are similar enough actors, with each having plenty of pull in the action world, but the Layer Cake character is more known for his charisma then his muscle. That is why the movie was so good. Craig owned the character, so replacing him might skew audiences.

But blocking out the silent character from the Transporter franchise and the other tough roles from the countless action movies he's been in over his career, Statham has the charisma. Ignoring the fight scenes and the explosions, Jason Statham is a well-adapted actor capable of this role. He is a fine replacement and a big enough name to re-launch the storyline.

This casting news also spoils the open-ended conclusion of Layer Cake where (SPOILER ALERT) Craig's character is shot as the film comes to an end. Now this new film will open where the last left off, with the character recovering from his wound and looking to have an easier, stress-free life. Of course getting out of the game is easier said than done.
