Several gossip reports confirm that actor Jake Gyllenhaal was sent to the emergency room on Wednesday morning (Nov. 13) after punching a mirror on the set of his new movie "Nightcrawler." Gyllenhaal recieved stitches and returned to work later that day.

Few details surrounding the emotional on-set scene have yet to be released, but according to People, the 32-year-old Hollywood heartthrob damaged his hand pretty bad.

One insider reveals, "Jake flipped out... His character was looking into a mirror during the scene and [he] punched the mirror in anger and broke it, cutting himself so bad he had to be taken to a hospital."

It remains unknown if this was a random outburst, or if Gyllenhaal was so in-character he didn't realize just what he was doing.

Gyllenhaal's fully devoted to this film role - maybe a little too much so. According to an onset eyewitness, things just got a little intense after a long and emotional 18-hour day:

"The scene was emotionally charged and his character was talking into a mirror and he got so into it, he banged his hands against the mirror and it broke and cut him... It was all the scene and not because he was mad about anything else."

According to a brief IMDb description, "Nightcrawler" is about "a young man [who] stumbles upon the underground world of L.A. freelance crime journalism." Apparently Gyllenhaal dropped 20-pounds for the part. The crime drama hits theaters in 2014.

Gyllenhaal is currently dating model Alyssa Miller.
