Last year, Joey Bada$$ garnered a lot of unwarranted praise for his Golden Age-aping all style, no substance mixtape 1999. Fellow dollar sign connoisseurs A$AP Mob must have taken notice, because their next collaborative effort will have a '90s throwback sound, according to A$AP Ferg.

"We have a lot of songs but the matter is picking the right songs," Ferg told Rolling Stone at a recent book signing event. "We're going for the early and late Nineties sound with a twist."

"We've got Ty Beats," Ferg added. "It's a lot of the same producers that we've been working with but it's next level."

The album will no doubt be lavished with praise by folks who get aroused listening to the Ed Lover show, leading to a whirlwind of critical praise and cries of "the return of NYC hip-hop" before deeper listening reveals the material to be as dissapointing as Lord$ Never Worry and LongLiveA$AP.

Of course, there is an alternative. Maybe Rocky and the rest of the Mob push themselves to be on Trap Lord Ferg's level, and they put out an album that is more than just an homage to a bygone era. One that actually stands on its own, boom bap or no.

Then I hear "Gotham City" in my head and all my hope withers and dies.
