Aquaman has been one of the most maligned characters in the DC Universe for a lot of fans. The character has become a punch line despite the fact that he is a charter member of the Justice League and the King of Atlantis. The comics have rebuilt Aquaman into a major player recently, but could a movie be on the way?

DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns told Variety recently that Aquaman is "a priority character for the company." DC recently announced an animated Aquaman movie that will come out on DVD, and Johns has written an Aquaman comic series that has held steady in sales and has ranked in the Top 50 in comic sales each month.

Johns went on to say that he thinks Aquaman already has an established base and that the underwater setting should be a benefit rather than a burden.

"There is no doubt in my mind that this is one of the most well-known characters among super-heroes, and in popular culture," Johns said. "We are finding new areas in the ocean every day. It's as alien as going to outer space."

Johns acknowledged that Aquaman had fallen on some hard times recently. "He became a little bit of a joke," he said. "Suddenly, he was nobody's favorite super hero." But now, with an "Aquaman" and "Justice League" crossover comic upcoming, Aquaman has received a new spot in the DC Universe. "He's a character that we talk quite a bit about."

But does any of this add up to an Aquaman movie? Given Johns' comments and the Batman vs. Superman movie in 2015, it would certainly make sense for DC to build to a Justice League film with individual superhero efforts. And, as Johns said, people know Aquaman (for better or worse), which would make DC's job a bit easier.
