Season 3 of Homeland has been the most criticized and divisive in the series' run thus far, but the most recent episode that saw the return of Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) to the main plot certainly elevated the show much closer to its former greatness.

Nearly everyone on Earth thinks Brody is the Langley bomber, but Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) has cleaned him up after his heroin addiction, recruited him for a mission in Iran and essentially turned him back into a Marine. The end of the last episode saw Brody deploying for his mission. But what happens next?

Lewis spoke to EW.com and the site asked him if Brody thinks he will return from this mission alive. The character said in the latest episode that he thought it was a long shot and made sure to see his daughter, Dana (Morgan Saylor), before he left. Here's what Lewis had to say on the subject:

"I'm not sure by this stage if he's thought that far ahead. Having recovered from his condition and being a part of something bigger than him, seemingly doing something for good, is what mostly preoccupies him. I think he's happy to be involved in something that he can atone for some of the mistakes he's made in his life. But yeah, sure, somewhere deep in Brody's head he hopes one day that he can stand in front of his family and tell them he's done a good thing; to be with Carrie and tell her he's succeeded. Of course, the extent to which he'd be allowed to ever be public with what he's done is a moot point since it's an act of intelligence work."

Lewis also gave some spoilers about the final three episodes but, unsurprisingly, they're pretty vague:

"He's going to go on his mission, which will be far from straight forward. It will be fraught with problems and doubt and hurdles, both personal and physical, that he will have to overcome."
