Those uber-controversial Russian anti-gay propaganda laws are back in the headlines again. The same statutes that led to members of Pussy Riot being jailed may put an end to Elton John's plan to perform in Moscow later this week.

According to The Times, John's upcoming performance is "on the verge of collapse" for fear that the out singer might express support for the repressed Russian LGBT community.

John expressed his desire to show support for the gay community in Russia in an interview with the Guardian earlier this year.

"I'm supposed to be going to Moscow in December," he said. "I've got to go. And I've got to think about what I'm going to say very carefully. There's two avenues of thought: do you stop everyone going, ban all the artists coming in from Russia? But then you're really leaving the men and women who are gay and suffering under the anti-gay laws in an isolated situation. As a gay man, I can't leave those people on their own without going over there and supporting them. I don't know what's going to happen, but I've got to go."

Earlier this year, American pop singer Selena Gomez was denied a visa to the country due to her outspoken views on homosexuality.
