IFP Gotham Independent Film Awards: 'Fruitvale Station,' Brie Larson of 'Short Term 12' and more wins

This year's host for the Independent Filmmakers Project (IFP) 4th annual IFP Gotham Independent Film Awards in New York City: Nick Kroll of the Kroll Show and The League. He's keeping things light and funny, though there are some serious wins to report.

The night is still young, but Fruitvale Station has already received two big awards. Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director went to Ryan Coogler. And Breakthrough actor went to its star, Michael B. Jordan (not to be confused with the Michael Jordan). This doesn't come as a huge surprise, as the film won Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for U.S. dramatic film at the Sundance Film Festival this year. The cast is joined by Melonie Diaz, Octavia Spencer and Kevin Durand.

The Weinstein Company is responsible for this film. According to Deadline.com, Mayor Bloomberg killed it with a joke about Harvey Weinstein "Independent filmmakers and New York have a lot in common... We both want Harvey Weinstein to be nice to us," Bloomberg said.

Mstars reported that Short Term 12 would be an indie film of the year. And its star, Brie Larson has won Best Actress. Matthew McConaughey won for Best Actor in Dallas Buyers Club.

There's stiff competition for Best Picture (last year went to Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom). This year 12 Years a Slave is in the mix along with Inside Llewyn Davis, Them Bodies Saints, Before Midnight, Upstream Color.

Gita Pullapilly, Director of Beneath the Harvest Sky won the Euphoria CK Spotlight on Women Filmmakers Live the Dream Grant. And the much-awaited award of the night, Best Feature went to the Coen brother's Inside Llewyn Davis.
