Benedict Cumberbatch starred as the main villain of Star Trek Into Darkness but in the buildup to the film, those behind the movie kept his character's identity a secret. Even director J.J. Abrams kept much of the identity of "John Harrison" under wraps and only talked about his mission without actually divulging anything about his history.

Many fans, though, put the pieces together and figured it out. Either way, all the secrecy turned out to be for nothing as, halfway through the movie, Harrison reveals his true identity as Khan, the genetically enhanced superhuman who was the main villain in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

Part of the strategy employed by Abrams and Paramount Pictures was to not drive away those who were unfamiliar with Star Trek by making them think they needed to know many details about the universe. But in a recent interview with MTV, Abrams revealed that he wishes he and Paramount had not worked so hard to conceal Khan's true identity:

"The truth is because it was so important to the studio that we not angle this thing for existing fans. If we said it was Khan, it would feel like you've really got to know what Star Trek is about to see this movie. That would have been limiting. I can understand their argument to try to keep that quiet, but I do wonder if it would have seemed a little bit less like an attempt at deception if we had just come out with it."

Both sides of the debate have merit; giving away Khan's identity would have blown the big twist in the movie, but covering it up ultimately didn't add anything to the film.

What do you think? Should Abrams and Paramount have just come out with it? Let us know in the comments.
