Laini Taylor's Young Adult novel series, Daughter of Smoke and Bone could quite possibly be the next big movie franchise to take the place of Twilight and The Hunger Games. There are numerous other attempts at this goal (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, Divergent, etc), but Universal is hoping that this story that mixes action, adventure and mythology into one story is the next craze to take over the film industry. This project has even received a director in Michael Gracey and screenwriter Stuart Beattie (Pirates of the Caribbean).
Daughter of Smoke and Bone was a huge success in the literary world and garnered two sequels: Days of Blood & Starlight and Dreams of Gods and Monsters, which will be released in the spring of 2014, concluding the series.
Here is the description of the first novel, which is now in the pre-production for its movie adaptation:
Karou is a seventeen-year-old art student with a most unusual family. From his desk in a dusty, otherworldly shop, her mysterious, monstrous father sends her on errands across the globe, collecting teeth for a shadowy purpose. On one such errand, Karou encounters an angel, and soon the mysteries of her life and her family are unraveled-with consequences both beautiful and dreadful. National Book Award finalist Laini Taylor has created a lushly imaginative, fully realized world in Daughter of Smoke and Bone. Taylor's writing is as sumptuous as poetry, and the story overflows with dark and delightful magic, star-crossed love, and difficult choices with heartbreaking repercussions.
What do you think of this new project? Do you think this will be the next big movie franchise?
