James McAvoy plays a young Professor Charles Xavier in the 2014 blockbuster X-Men: Days of Future Past. News broke last week that a sequel to that film entitled X-Men: Apocalypse would come out in 2016. And apparently, McAvoy learned this at around the same time as the rest of us.

The actor appeared at the British Independent Film Awards for his movie Filth and told Red Carpet News TV that he "only heard about [it] this morning." The video below was published on Dec. 9, so it's unclear exactly to when "this morning" refers, but it couldn't have been much later than the official announcement. McAvoy also said that director Bryan Singer is still in the editing room for Days of Future Past and he has not said anything to the actor about Apocalypse.

He also called DOFP "the biggest X-Men film yet, without a doubt. And I think you're gonna journey into darkness. Which sounds very ominous, doesn't it?" He talked further about his portrayal of Charles Xavier in both X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past:

"The personal pleasure for me in First Class was presenting a Charles Xavier to the fans but also to a new audience. He was very different from the Charles that you expected, but he was still very, like, 'Everything's going good,' you know? In the second movie, I get to present another version of Charles Xavier who's still very different from the Charles that used to exist but he's also remarkably different from the Charles from First Class, as well. So it's great that even though it's a sequel, even though it's a franchise, I keep getting to reinvent Charles Xavier and that's amazing."

He talked about working with Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender again:

"I get to go and work with my pals. That's sort of the beautiful thing. And my pals happen to be some of the best actors working today, so I'm a lucky, lucky boy."

Finally, McAvoy said that he is contracted to play Charles Xavier again and he would like to do so. It stands to reason, then, that he would be back for Apocalypse.
