Fans of the iconic gangsta rap group N.W.A. have something to look forward to in the near future. Universal Pictures is moving forward with an N.W.A. biopic and Jonathan Herman is slated to pen the project.

The film will trace the roots of the group and their rise to stardom. F. Gary Gray is attached to helm the project.

Sources say the studio is working on picking up the title for the film from New Line, who had been developing the movie for years.

The group's original members included  Arabian Prince, DJ Yella, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, and Ice Cube, who is producing the film with his Cube Vision partner Matt Alvarez.

Eazy-E's widow, Tomica Woods, and Dr. Dre will also have a hand in producing the film. Dr. Dre will be contributing under his Crucial Films banner. Will Packer is executive producing the biopic.

Alan Wenkus and Leigh Savidge wrote the original script. The two then sold the script to New Line with the music rights attached in 2008. they were brought in to do two rewrites.

Andrew Berloff later penned another draft of the script. Herman, who is slated to write the latest draft, recently was hired to rewrite the psychological thriller Demonologists for Robert Zemeckis' ImageMovers.

Herman has also written an untitled hacker film produced by Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson that is loosely based on a GQ article titled "The Hacker Is Watching." He has written a draft of Universal's remake of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds as well.

This should be an interesting project once everything comes together. Wonder who they'll select to play the roles of N.W.A.

What do you think? Are you excited to see a film about N.W.A.?
