Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street was probably the most anticipated movie release on Christmas Day 2013, but it came in second to The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in the money department on Dec. 25.

The Hobbit 2 hauled in an estimated $9.32 million on Christmas Day, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com. The Wolf of Wall Street came in a close second with $9.15 million, while Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues placed third with $8.1 million. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty ranked fourth with $7.825 million and American Hustle placed fifth with $7.4 million. The Keanu Reeves samurai pic 47 Ronin finished sixth with an estimated $7 million.

Of the aforementioned movies, only The Wolf of Wall Street, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and 47 Ronin actually premiered on Christmas Day. The Hobbit 2 and American Hustle debuted on Dec. 13, Anchorman 2 hit theaters on Dec. 18.

The Wolf of Wall Street, The Hobbit 2 and Anchorman 2 each hold ratings of 75 percent on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty ranks at 47 percent, American Hustle is at 94 percent and 47 Ronin is far behind at a dismal 11 percent.

Christmas Day is just the first day of a five-day movie weekend, so Monday will offer a clearer picture of how each of these movies stack up against each other. There's been plenty of Oscar buzz (as usual) about Leonardo DiCaprio's performance in The Wolf of Wall Street, so maybe Scorsese's film will climb to the top spot by Monday.
