Captain America: The Winter Soldier aka Captain America 2 will be the first solo outing for the star-spangled hero since The Avengers. By now, many fans know that the movie will delve into how Cap, who has been thawed out from the World War II-era, adjusts to the modern day.

An interesting aspect of the film is that, in the original comics, Captain America woke up in the 1960s and experienced the revolutions and liberations of those times. His values clashed with those of the world in which he found himself. But in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Cap couldn't wake up until 2011, an even more jarring transition.

Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige revealed in an interview with Empire magazine (via Comic Book Movie) that Captain America: The Winter Soldier would harken back to political thrillers in the Watergate years of the 1970s in order to recapture some of that original spirit of the comics.

"In our attempt to make all of our films feel unique and feel different we found ourselves going back to things like [Three Days of the Condor]. Also the other political thrillers of the '70s: The Parallax View, All The President's Men. This was a time that Cap existed in in the comics. He found himself in the swinging '60s followed by the Watergate era followed by the Reagan era followed by where we are today. In the comics it was a hell of a journey for Steve, And we couldn't take him through those years because in our cinematic universe he was asleep. But we wanted to force him to confront that kind of moral conundrum, something with that '70s flavor. And in our film that takes the form of S.H.I.E.L.D."

Captain America's values and his reaction to a modern world are key components of the character, so it makes sense for Marvel to explore that in The Winter Soldier, particularly after The Avengers, in which Cap didn't have time to do anything but fight off an alien invasion.
