Showtime is expected to reveal series pickups for Philip Seymour Hoffman comedy Happyish and Joshua Jackson drama The Affair on Thursday at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The new shows would fill the open slots from Dexter and Californication.

Happyish examines what it means to search for happiness in ones life and how the pursuit can end up being the obstacle itself. It follows Hoffman's character, 42-year-old Thom Payne, who has found himself in a job where his bosses are half his age.

Rhys Ifans plays Jonathan, Payne's mentor, and he's encouraging Payne to "rebrand" himself. Beyond that, Payne isn't sure if his Viagra will interfere with his Prozac, and a professional headhunter has convinced him that happiness is a myth. Kathryn Hahn stars as Lee Payne, his wife, who is trying to find deeper meaning and purpose in life beyond just reaching for a general idea of happiness.

Shalom Auslander, acclaimed author and This American Life contributor, created the comedy and writes and executive produces alongside Hoffman via his Cooperstown Productions banner. Ken Kwapis, developed the comedy and will executive produce. Alexandra Beattie will co-executive produce and John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) directed the pilot.

The Affair takes a look at both the male and female personal perspectives in an extramarital affair. Ruth Wilson (Luther) plays Alison, who is a waitress in the Hamptons dealing with the aftermath of tragedy while her husband, Cole (Fringe's Joshua Jackson) is trying to keep things afloat, both with his wife and with their struggling finances that could lead to the loss of the ranch that has been in his family for generations.

Things take a turn when Alison begins an affair with a New York public school teacher and aspiring novelist, Noah, played by Dominic West (The Wire). ER's Maura Tierney plays Helen, Noah's wife of 17 years.

Writer-producer Sarah Treem (House of Cards) wrote the original script from a story co-created with Hagai Levi. Treem and Levi will exec produce alongside Jeffrey Reiner (Friday Night Lights), who directed the pilot.

Both shows have been picked up for 10 episodes.
