How I Met Your Mother Season 9 Spoilers: Series finale will jump through time, but how far?

How I Met Your Mother is on its way toward its Season 9 and series finale on Monday, March 31, and the hit CBS sitcom will bow out with a one-hour sendoff. Fans have been wondering for years how the show would end, and while we can't answer that, we do have a bit of information from the series' co-creators about the last episode.

We already know that the series finale is entitled "Last Forever," which seems appropriate given the epic scope of the love story that Future Ted has been telling for eight-plus seasons. But in typical HIMYM fashion, the finale would have to jump through time, right? The "Mega Buzz" column at TV Guide has more:

The series finale is titled "Last Forever," which, like most HIMYM episodes, will fiddle with the timeline. 'We're a very time-jumpy show, so you will see a lot of the future and where everyone is in the end,' HIMYM boss Craig Thomas says. But when is the end -- like past 2030? 'Well, that is the future!" he says with a wink. Thomas admits that he and co-creator Carter Bays haven't written the finale yet, but 'we know what the last minute or two is like.'"

Bays and Thomas have said repeatedly that they have had the ending in mind for quite a while, so Thomas' comments about the finale are not surprising. Now it becomes a matter of plugging in all the details and writing to that ending, but hopefully the two are up to the challenge. After all, HIMYM has delivered emotionally powerful and satisfying episodes in the past, so the series finale would likely be the best yet.
