The amount of truly influential artists we've lost in the last several months is staggering. On the rock end, Lou Reed passed away at the end of last year. Now, the man who is more responsible than any other for the folk explosion of the '50s and '60s (and the genre's continued importance), Pete Seeger has died at the age of 94.
Seeger served as a mentor for several, more successful folk singer-songwriters like Bob Dylan and Don McLean. His most famous tunes include the Civil Rights Movement anthem "We Shall Overcome", protest song "Where Have All The Flowers Gone", "If I Had A Hammer" and "Turn! Turn! Turn!", a track that was later a hit for the Byrds.
Seeger passed awat at New York Presbyterian Hospital on Monday (January 27).
