The news on the Man of Steel sequel known for now as Batman vs. Superman continues to roll in almost each day, and today brings news from Matt Damon on the plot of the film in which his close friend, Ben Affleck, plays the Dark Knight.

MTV News caught up with Damon at the premiere of The Monuments Men and spoke to him about the superhero movie, specifically Affleck's role in it. Damon replied that he not only has seen the costume, but he knows the plot.

"I've seen a picture. I have seen a picture. It's excellent," Damon said of the Batman costume. "And I've talked to him about the storyline, and it's great."

Affleck's casting has been much maligned by a vocal section of the fan base, as some believe the actor cannot pull off Bruce Wayne and/or Batman despite his recent career resurgence (perhaps the stink of Daredevil still lingers a decade later). Damon acknowledged those concerns and addressed them.

"Look, I've known him for 30-something years," he said. "I'd be the first guy being like, 'Buddy, what are you doing?' But I think the movie is going to be great."

In other news, The Hollywood Reporter notes that Warner Bros. considered bringing in a veteran actor to play Lex Luthor in the movie, but ultimately went the 30-year-old Jesse Eisenberg because they wanted a younger Lex. WB also considered Girls star Adam Driver, but he had a schedule conflict, and Joaquin Phoenix passed on the role.

Multiple sources told THR that the studio never approached Bryan Cranston, 57, for the part (even though his name had floated out as a rumor), nor did they go after Tom Hanks, also 57, though his name had been discussed internally. Eisenberg and Cavill are both 30 years old.

The Batman vs. Superman version of Lex Luthor will be a younger version than that of Superman Returns (Kevin Spacey was 46) or Superman (Gene Hackman was 48). In fact, the article notes that the portrayal will align more with recent Superman comic book and TV iterations (like Smallville), in which Lex and Clark are childhood friends.

THR also states that Snyder and the studio have not been holding numerous auditions for the parts, but are instead going after actors from a shortlist. "Zack doesn't see a lot of people," a source told the site.
