50 Cent has left his longtime label of Aftermath/Interscope for an indie label. Namely, Caroline Records.
Caroline, a long-running independent distribution network, has several hip-hop acts it is currently promoting including Sebastian Mikael and E-40. Now, they have gained the entirety of the G-Unit.
"I have had great success to date with Shady/Aftermath/Interscope, and I'd like to thank Eminem and Dr. Dre for giving me an incredible opportunity," 50 Cent said. "I've learned so much from them through the years. I am excited to enter this new era where I can carry out my creative vision."
While the move isn't that big a deal in the grand scheme of things, it is big for what it says about the state of the record industry. 50 Cent was one of the last great, big-label, corporate-push rappers to turn out a monstrous multi-platinum album. When even Fiddy is seeking a better deal from an independent distro, you know the giants are in trouble.
