Scottish actress Karen Gillan can be seen on the big screen this year in Guardians of the Galaxy and Oculus, but this week she was talking about her previous role on BBC's legendary series Doctor Who. More specifically, she was defending the show's executive producer and head writer Steven Moffat after he received criticism for taking part in sexist writing. Considering she was the main woman he wrote for from 2008 to 2013, her opinion clearly matters.

"I just don't understand that," the 26-year-old actress said. "I feel like [with Amy Pond] I had a very rounded, interesting, flawed and layered character to play."

Gillan added: "I wore skirts but Steven Moffat had nothing to do with that. He doesn't care about costumes. So I don't really understand [the criticism] if I've got to be honest."

What do you think of this claim about Moffat's writing?

Meanwhile, Karen was just cast in the leading role of the new ABC series Selfie. This will be Karen's first U.S. television role.

The Independent reports:

The comedy, which stars Gillan as 20-something Eliza Dooley, sees her become obsessed with her perception on social media. After suffering a public and humiliating breakup, she becomes the subject of a viral video and has more social media followers than she ever imagined- but for all the wrong reasons. The viral video leads to her enlisting the help of a marketing expert to help repair the damage to her online public image.

Selfie comes from Suburgatory creator Emily Kapnek and has been ordered to pilot.
