"Poker Face" hitmaker Lady Gaga is in the news again, and this time for buying an expensive dress - a really expensive one.

Lady Gaga bought an Alexander McQueen gown at a world record price of £85,250 from the Daphne Guinness auction held at the Christie's. The actual price of the gown, an ivory, empire-line gown along with a photograph by Mat Collishaw of Guinness wearing the dress featured in UK Harper's Bazaar magazine, was estimated between £15,000-20,000. The ivory silk gown, now a proud possession of Lady Gaga, is called The Girl Who Lived In The Tree.

The auction was from the personal collection of fashion collector, Daphne Guinness, to raise funds for the Isabella Blow Foundation, which she set up in memory of her friend. Designs from McQueen, Chanel, Balenciaga, Gareth Pugh, Christopher Kane, Lanvin, Lacroix, Prada, Gucci, Alaia and others featured in the sale.

The auction saw bidders from 21 countries taking part actively. Various items fetched a total of over £100,000 for charity. A Spanish-style white lace dress with black matador jacket was bought by a private bidder in the US for £16,250, a portrait of Daphne Guinness taken by fashion photographer Mario Testino for British Vogue in 2008 was realised for £133,250 and another McQueen - a metallic silver mini-dress dating from 2008 fetched £79,250.

An overwhelmed Guinness thanked everyone for the support.

"This cause is close to my heart. I am genuinely touched by the response it has generated, and truly excited for the future of the Isabella Blow Foundation. I'm overwhelmed by how many bidders took part this evening and I'm particularly moved by Lady Gaga's support for the foundation. I like her very much, and it's lovely to see the nascent beginnings of something that may help other people," Guinness told the Independent.

Lady Gaga has been an admirer of Guinness and Blow since quite some time.

'"Isabella and Daphne are two exceptional human beings, women, icons. Daphne, like Isabella, is a huge source of inspiration for me. I cherish them both. It is as if we are all cut from the same cloth," Gaga told the Daily Mail.

The amount collected at the auction will go to the Isabella Blow charity foundation that promotes emerging talent in the fashion industry.
