In 2012 his independent release 'Habits & Contradictions' helped him rise to fame. He did talk about topics such as sex, money and drugs, and used plenty of foul language, but he portrayed the elements that people consider only "real rappers" to have. Since then there's been a huge build up to ScHoolboy Q's latest album 'Oxymoron' and it doesn't disappoint. In the opening song 'Gangsta' he shows off his tough side through his quick, destructive vocals. The opening song sets the tone for the rest of the album, and it's a clear indicator of how serious he intends to be with his latest release.

Does the serious rapper know how to have fun on the beat? It seems so. On the second track 'Los Awesome' there's a catchy beat and harmless vocals, showing that his music can be apprenticed for it's lyrics and it's harmony. Billboard went as far as saying his album shows both "paradise and poison" and there's no better way to describe his new album.

The album has made room for romance, joy, love, despair and pain, and it's not easy for one album to represent all of these feelings, especially when the artist is trying to shoot his way to the top of the rap game. His daughter, Joy, is on the album artwork, and is a heavy influence throughout the album, showing his mature side very much exists in this album. He shows the struggle he's endured to provide for his daughter. You get the sense that ScHoolboy Q is simply showing where he is now, how he got there and why we should respect him, and you can't ask for more than that in an album.

'Oxymoron' has drawn comparison to Kendrick Lamar's debut album 'Good kid, M.A.A.d city'. That's not a bad comparison s that's been labelled the best album of the past few years, so it appears the pair are in good company with one another. With features from Kendrick Lamar himelf, 2 Chainz and Jay Rock, this is an album you will listen to on repeat for weeks.
