'Boy Meets World' sequel show 'Girl Meets World' stars best friend similar to Shawn Hunter

The Boy Meets World sequel series Girl Meets World is set to debut later this year, and reports about the characters continue to come out in the buildup to the premiere. The latest piece of news reveals that the best friend on the series will bear a striking resemblance to Shawn Hunter (Rider Strong).

The "Spoiler Chat" column at E! Online reveals that Maya (Sabrina Carpenter) will share many traits with Cory's (Ben Savage) best friend.

"I'm loving all these Girl Meets World spoilers you guys are giving us! Got any more?
We sure do! We cannot wait to meet Maya, Riley Matthew's best friend-aka the female Shawn Hunter. Not only is Maya a slacker in school, she, like Shawn, also has an absentee mother. Maya's mom is working as a waitress in a diner while she waits for her big break to fulfill her dreams of being an actress. Hopefully, Topanga and Cory can shake some sense into this mother, so she'll focus on her daughter more."

This is another example of how Girl Meets World will follow the same trajectory of Boy Meets World, at least at first. E! Online previously reported that Riley Matthews (Rowan Blanchard) would deal with several characters who resemble Minkus (Lee Norris), the nerdy kid from Cory's sixth-grade class.

It makes sense that Girl Meets World would want to mirror Boy Meets World in as many ways as possible. Creator Michael Jacobs has said that the new show must stand on its own and not just be a BMW clone, but rooting the show firmly in its predecessor is a smart way to bring in fans of the original.
