Now that American Horror Story: Coven, the third season of the show, has ended, fans have turned their attention to Season 4. Series creator Ryan Murphy has teased that clues for the location of the new season were within Season 3, but a writer for the show has now confirmed the setting.

Douglas Petrie said the following on the Nerdist Writers Panel podcast when asked by another panelist if "carnival" would be the theme of Season 4:

"It doesn't have a title, but that's the idea. Very roughly, that's the idea."

The idea gained some steam after drawings of a fictitious season called American Horror Story: Circus appeared online last year. Fans began to discuss the possibility of a carnival-themed season, and it seems as though the series will head in that direction.

The "Spoiler Chat" column at E! Online offered this brief tease of next season last month:

"You know how Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk love to drop little hints in the previous season? Well, Falchuk told us there was a clue in the finale that nobody has guessed yet. Now go watch the finale over and over and report back. BALENCIAGA!"

EW.com had asked Murphy, who has said Season 4 will take place in the 1950s, if Season 4 would be set in Paris because Fiona went there, but Murphy said the guess "could not be more far off." He also declined to say much about next season "because we haven't even started the deals, and I literally just locked this thing on Monday. I'm meeting with people too and the writers haven't even started yet."

He did, however, offer the following tease:

"Next year will be equally as challenging, because so much of it is period and bizarre and crazy and gothic. My feeling is, if you loved this season, you'll love next season. It has the same sort of comedic tone to it."
