Sink Your Teeth Into Guillermo Del Toro’s 'The Strain' This Summer

If you are a fan of True Blood and The Vampire Diaries, then get ready to sink your teeth into the first season of The Strain. The serialized vampire drama is set to debut on the FX cable channel this July.

Collider has announced that FX has picked up the vampire series, The Strain, for 13 episodes. Filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro (Pacific Rim) joined author Chuck Hogan to create the best-selling vampire novel trilogy, which has also been adapted into comics and now television. The story centers on a team of scientists who wage a war against adeadly strain of vampirism.

The Strain is a high concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Ephraim, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers wage war for the fate of humanity itself.

"The Strain books are near and dear to my heart and now, Chuck and I have the blessing of a partnership with Carlton [Cruse] and FX that holds great promise," said Del Toro. "Working with FX has yielded an amazing experience with total creative freedom and support."


Dark Horse Comics has adapted the popular horror books as an ongoing series. Writer David Lapham and artist Mike Huddleston have translated the terror and suspense from the book's pages into the comics medium. Recently, the comic book series has concluded the second chapter of the trilogy with The Strain: The Fall #11.

Guillermo Del Toro has written the first episode with co-author, Chuck Hogan, and will serve as the director of The Strain pilot. Be sure to pick up The Strain Volume: 1 from Dark Horse Comics before the TV series premieres in July.
