Two days after the series finale of 'How I Met Your Mother' and the Internet is still reeling with how it ended. Fans just found out how everything played out with the beloved characters, but star Josh Radnor claims that he was one of the few people who knew how it was going to end from the beginning.

Radnor sat down with Vulture to discuss the series finale and why he thought that the title of the show was a "fake out."

He tells Vulture that he was a little apprehensive about how the creators wanted the series to end, with the controversial decision that they would kill off his wife, played by Cristin Milioti, so that his character Ted could end up with Robin in the end (played by Cobie Smudler).

Knowing what happened from the beginning, he wasn't so sure if the writers would want to come back to their decision nine years later. "I didn't know if they would actually want to come back to it and do that especially after Cristin, because she was so wonderful and the fans seemed to really take to her. So I asked them, 'Are you guys still doing that?' And they said yeah."

Radnor mentions little hints that were dropped along the way, which lead viewers to think Ted would end up with Robin all along. He mentions that this was done by the writers so that the finale would be less shocking for people.

"It was going to be shocking no matter what and they wanted to soften it a little bit or at least get people talking about it."

His speech in the episode 'The Time Travelers' is when Radnor started hearing the possibility of Ted ending up with Robin.

Some fans are angered by the show, feeling that they have been mislead by the title since the beginning, something that Radnor feels similar about. "I thought the title of the show was always a bit of a fake-out. It was more of a hook to hang the thing on. Really it was more about these are the crazy adventures and these are the lessons I had to learn before I met your mother."

Other fans are angered over the twist during the finale. "Part of the DNA of the show is they lead you one way and then they pull you back. You think you're watching one thing in an episode and then it turns out you're watching something completely different. I think that the twists in the finale were in keeping with that."

But what does Radnor think of how controversial the ending of the show was, "I'm a fan of the finale and obviously I'm a fan of the show. I think people are having to deal with grief on a number of levels. There's grief in the episode, but then there's grief at letting the show go. "The show was always bold and daring and questioning assumptions and leading you where you thought you didn't want to go, but realized at the end that that was where you belonged."
