Could Cobie Smulders become a series regular on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

Cobie Smulders' two most famous roles in the last several years were Robin Scherbatsky on the long-running CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, which just wrapped its nine-season run on Monday, and Agent Maria Hill in Marvel's The Avengers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. She will also likely appear in The Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015.

The latter character appeared briefly in the pilot for the Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television show. Now that HIMYM has ended, could Smulders become a regular actress on the Marvel show? The "Ask Ausiello" column at TVLine throws a wet blanket on that idea and even casts doubt on the chances of the show's renewal.

Ausiello: As awesome as that would be, I can't see it happening - at least not the series regular part. That said, a Maria Hill arc in Season 2 seems plausible - assuming there is a Season 2."

The ratings for the show have declined since its premiere, though part of that is likely due to the erratic scheduling and frequent breaks that stopped momentum from week to week.
