The idea of a dream match between Stone Cold Steve Austin and CM Punk has swirled in fans' heads for years as they have wanted to see the antihero of the Attitude Era and the modern era clash in the ring. And according to a new report, this match might have been closer to happening than previously thought.

Wrestlezone.com posted an exclusive report on Saturday from sources inside WWE that the company pitched an angle to Stone Cold Steve Austin and CM Punk for WrestleMania 30 on Sunday.

Reportedly, the two would have had a segment together that ended with Austin giving Punk a Stone Cold Stunner in order to set up a match at WrestleMania 31. The report does not state if either man agreed to the angle, and Wrestlezone notes that Punk was still in Chicago, not New Orleans (the site of Mania) as of Friday night.

Furthermore, the report states that The Rock will fly to New Orleans on Sunday in order to be a part of a segment at WrestleMania 30.

The Boston Herald spoke to Stone Cold recently and Austin talked about CM Punk by saying he would bring out the best in the "Best in the World."

"I could get more out of that guy than anybody else walking Planet Earth," said Austin. "He could have that ultimate 'Come to Jesus' meeting with me. Punk's been around for a long time and he's a smart guy, but he never stepped into a damn squared circle with the intensity of a guy like Stone Cold Steve Austin."

Austin also said on his podcast, The Steve Austin Show, he believes Punk will return to WWE at WrestleMania 30.

What do you think? Is this all still just a pipe dream, or could this match actually happen? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
