In one of the most obvious moves in recent television history, HBO has renewed its mega-hit Game of Thrones for Seasons 5 and 6.

Deadline reports the show received the two-day renewal just one day after reports that the Season 4 premiere broke the show's own ratings record and delivered HBO's highest ratings since The Sopranos series finale. This is the first multi-season pickup for Game of Thrones.

George R.R. Martin, the writer of the book series on which the series is based, is currently working on the sixth book of A Song of Ice and Fire entitled The Winds of Winter. Some fans are concerned that Martin's notoriously slow pace could mean the series would catch up to his work, but the current Season 4 covers the events in the latter portion of the third book, so there's time before the show goes over a cliff.

Either way, we know for sure that Game of Thrones has at least two more seasons (and we're willing to bet many more) in its future.

"Game of Thrones is a phenomenon like no other," said HBO programming president Michael Lombardo, according to Deadline. "(Creators) David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, along with their talented collaborators, continue to surpass themselves, and we look forward to more of their dazzling storytelling."

What do you think, Game of Thrones fans? Are you at all surprised by the multi-season renewal? Are you concerned that the show might one day catch up to Martin's books? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
