Dove recently released its latest campaign video with the tagline "Beauty is a state of mind."  The video currently has over seven million views on YouTube.

Dr. Anne Kearney-Cooke, a psychologist and body-image expert, has been conducting scientific research about women for the last 30 years and stands in with the participants of the Dove's social experiment.

With the RX-B beauty patch, Dove had a focus group of women apply the patch and document their experience with the patch through daily video diary entries.  The women reported feeling more confident in their appearance, more social, and feeling beautiful.

When asked if they would buy the patch, the participants said yes.  One participant went so far as to say, "I would love for people to have the type of change that I've had by trying the beauty patch."  The catch of the social experiment: the patch was simply a patch.  It did not have any mood-boosting ingredients that would produce the change the women of the study were reporting.

The campaign video has received criticism from news outlets like Time.  In a blog post response to the video, Laura Stampler said the video, "Makes women look gullible and kind of dumb in the name of 'Real Beauty.'"  Stampler also noted that Dove used a similar advertising tactic with its Real Beauty Sketches video, which became an instant viral sensation.

Do you think Dove's relying on women's insecurities to sell their products?  Or do you think the company is trying to help women rethink the way they see themselves?
