Neil Patrick Harris did NOT yell "motherf*cker" at a fan during a recent Broadway performance of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch." But the actor's character (transgendered German punk rocker  Hedwig) sure does!

Apparently, during a show performance on Saturday (April 19), a member of the audience sporadically yelled, "We Love You Neil!"

Several gossip outlets report that Harris immediately responded with a harsh, "I'm doing something up here, motherf*cker!"

But there's more to the story than just that.

The infamous rock musicial is very improvisational. Cast and crew enjoy audience interaction and participation, so the "How I Met Your Mother" star was just going along with it!

A rep for Harris tells GossipCop:

"The response to the fan yelling was actually done in character - Neil as Hedwig, not as though Neil stopped the show to respond out of character."

The source goes on to explain:

"When the fan initially yelled, 'I love you, Neil,' Neil (as Hedwig) then responded, 'Who's Neil? I'm not Neil.' He then looked over at Yitzhak (played by Lena Hall) and said, 'Are you Neil? You better not be Neil' followed by Hedwig then offering the quote in question... It was all done in good fun, and fully in the context of the show. The audience went crazy and it really was a light-hearted moment, which is not being properly contextualized in any of these various posts."

See - "all in good fun!" Pretty funny stuff.
