Director James Ponsoldt's upcoming film, The End of the Tour, recently released its first images of actor Jason Segel portraying the late novelist David Foster Wallace. This movie is based on David Lipsky's 2010 book, Although Of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself: A Road Trip with David Foster Wallace. While this got plenty people excited for the project, relatives of the deceased author have officially stated this week that they oppose this film.

According to the Associated Press:

Lawyers for Wallace's family and literary trust said in a news release Monday that they "have no connection with, and neither endorse nor support" the film. They add that "the trust was given no advance notice that this production was underway" and the film "is loosely based on transcripts from an interview David consented to 18 years ago for a magazine article. ... That article was never published and David would have never agreed that those saved transcripts could later be repurposed as the basis of a movie." There was no mention of Lipsky's book in the release, which also states that "individuals and companies involved with the production were made keenly aware of the substantive reasons for the trust's and family's objections to this project."

Representatives of Wallace's estate say that he should be "remembered for his extraordinary writing" instead.

It's never good when something like this happens to a project. This could turn into the movie either not having the rights to Wallace's name, his work, or it could possibly fall apart completely.
