After saving New York from an alien invasion, what will it take for the Avengers to reunite once again? Already in production, writer/director Joss Whedon spills the beans about what obstacles his superhero team will face in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

In an interview with Empire, Whedon provides some insight about the supervillain the Avengers will face off in the highly anticipated sequel. Whedon explains why Ultron interests him so much, "I'm having a blast with Ultron. He's not a creature of logic - he's a robot who's genuinely disturbed. We're finding out what makes him menacing and at the same time endearing and funny and strange and unexpected, and everything a robot never is."

In the Marvel Universe, Ultron was created by the scientist Henry Pym, also known as The Ant-Man. After forming a consciousness of its own, Ultron begins to grow hatred towards his so-called "father," and rebels against him. In the recent epic story arc, Age of Ultron, it takes the combined efforts of the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four to stop him from conquering Earth.

[Spoilers] During the end credits of Captain America: The Winter Solider, viewers caught a glimpse of Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). The two seemed to be locked in their cells, harnessing their own superpowers.

Whedon explains more about their roles in his film, "I fiercely dislike the idea of just throwing in more people for the sake of doing that. But last time I had all of Earth's Mightiest Heroes versus one British character actor, and I needed more conflict."

Avengers: Age of Ultron is scheduled to hit theaters on April 24, 2015. For more about director Joss Whedon's interview, check out Empire magazine's June issue.
