Neil Patrick Harris portrayed Barney Stinson for nine seasons on CBS' How I Met Your Mother, which aired its series finale less than a month ago on March 31. The ending was controversial,, as some fans loved the direction creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas took, while others thought it betrayed the fans' time and investment.

The finale ended with Ted (Josh Radnor) revealing that he told his children this epic story because his wife, Tracy (Cristin Milioti) had passed away six years earlier, and his kids give him their blessing to pursue Robin (Cobie Smulders) again. The twist left many fans upset, but Harris approved.

"It wasn't necessarily the happy ending that people were expecting," Harris said on The Late Show with David Letterman. "But Carter and Craig, who were once writers on your show and the executive producers and creators, knew this ending years ago and had played towards that. And I was a big proponent of it and a big fan of it."

Harris, who currently stars in Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Broadway, went on to say that the finale was true to life:

"Sometimes, people's growth doesn't really mean that they grow up. There are certain people who you want them to get into a solid relationship and really settle down and learn from things. And you want Barney to be the guy you can bring your mom home to, but Barney's the guy who wants to bang your mom."

Despite a season's worth of buildup to their wedding, Robin and Barney didn't get a happy ending, either.

"At the end of the day, it's not always meant to be that way," he said.
