When Manchester United signed David De Gea he was a skinny teen, full of mistakes, yet the Red Devils were sure they had one of the hottest goalkeeping prospects in the world, and they were right. He replaced veteran Edwin Van Der Sar, and the fans seemed like they'd never accept him. A few years later and he's United's best player by a long way. With United enduring a torrid season and a summer of rebuilding looming, can United build a new, exciting franchise around the talented Spanish keeper?

United held their annual awards Thursday, and although there wasn't much to celebrate, De Gea did the double, winning the Player of the Year award, voted by the supporters and the Players' Player of the Year. His form has been second to none, and arguable he's saved United from further humiliation. De Gea is an important part of the United team, and with the club looking to spend around $300 million dollars on new players, it's important they make David the center piece of everything they do.

De Gea was happy with the awards and said "I want to thank the fans. From my very first day at the club, I have felt their love and I'm really happy. For them, we will try next season to do our best again. I'm really happy to win this honour. I'm very grateful."

How long can De Gea dominate the Premier League for, and can United successfully rebuild around the Spanish superstar, or will he have his work cut out?
